44 Schools Designated as Seoul Innovative Schools
Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cho Hiyeon) designated 44 schools (26 elementary, 13 middle and 5 high schools) as Seoul Innovative Schools for the 2015 school year amongst the elementary, middle and general high schools in the Seoul vicinity.
The following is the breakdown of the score criteria: competence of teachers (20 points), ability to cooperate with parents and community (20 points), educational conditions (20 points), and innovative school operation plan (40 points). Three schools (2 middle and 1 high) which scored below 60% were eliminated. Of the selected schools, 30 schools (9 elementary, 8 middle and 3 high) are 4th year innovative schools that would have reached expiration on February 2015, and 6 schools are preparatory innovative schools.
Each Seoul Innovative School will receive a budget of 65 million KRW (re-designated schools: 45 million KRW) in order to accomplish tasks required of innovative schools, such as innovative school operations, innovative lessons and curriculum, and promoting cooperative culture. In addition, the schools will be appointed as autonomous schools and receive administrative and financial support.
As of March 1st 2015, a total of 89 schools (52 elementary, 25 middle and 12 high), taking into account the 44 recently designated schools which also includes a middle school that's to be constructed in March 2015, will be functioning as Seoul Innovative Schools.
Although the number of schools that applied this term (47 schools) did not reach the earlier goal of 55 schools, it has expanded by 70% compared to the introductory period of innovative schools in 2011~2012. Despite the passive innovative school policy direction during the latter period of 2013~2014, one can see that the demand of Seoul innovative schools rapidly grew.
17 schools have already applied to be designated as innovative schools for the latter period of 2015 (June deadline), which is in line with S.M.O.E's aim of having 100 schools and 200 schools operate as innovative schools by 2015 and 2018, respectively. We expect the innovative school culture to be achieved through the expansion of innovative schools, leading to the increase in satisfaction of Seoul Education, eventually culminating into an innovative education towards the future for the happiness of all.
